After watching some rather well edited YouTube videos we made one of our first trips out a drive to Lake Isabella, located at the extreme southern end of the Sierra foothills. Because of some roadwork, the normal route, one of the most beautiful drives in this area, we closed. So the nav routed us through some very small roads, in one case, a dirt road across from railroad tracks. But we got there. While a lot of the drive was difficult, there were many spots that were just gorgeous as we made our way through the foothills to the Lake.

Lake Isabella (the lake) itself can be beautiful. A lot depends on your POV. From one side it’s a rather boring human made lake from the other, it’s a very pretty lake framed by the hills. Lake Isabella the town is very small, a little run down but still nice. It really has no charm like some of the other foothill communities we have visited (see our post on Kernville).
Still and all, a great road trip. We would never choose that route again. A little more than an hour and a half for us. We averaged 36MPG for the entire trip.
